Fredrik Wersäll appointed Marshal of the Realm

HM The King has appointed Court of Appeal President Fredrik Wersäll as Marshal of the Realm from 1 September 2018. He will succeed Svante Lindqvist, who has held the post for almost nine years.

“I am very honoured by this appointment. The Marshal of the Realm plays a central role in the Royal Court and thus also has a central role to play in assisting the Head of State in His important duties representing Sweden. My impression of the Royal Court is of a highly professional organisation, and it will be a great pleasure to work there,” says Court of Appeal President Fredrik Wersäll.

Fredrik Wersäll has been President of the Svea Court of Appeal since 2008. His previous posts have included Prosecutor-General, Justice of the Supreme Court, and Director-General for Legal Affairs at the Ministry of Justice. He has also had a number of public assignments, including as an Inquiry Chair and as Chair of the Swedish Press Council. He chairs the Government Disciplinary Board for Higher Officials and the Swedish Anti-Corruption Institute.

The Marshal of the Realm is the most senior official and head of the Royal Court of Sweden. Fredrik Wersäll will become the 47th Marshal of the Realm since the post was established in 1607, and the current King’s eighth.

“I am delighted with the choice of Fredrik Wersäll as my successor. His qualifications and experience will greatly benefit the Royal Family and the Royal Court. I have been offered visiting professorships abroad, and I look forward to resuming my history of science research,” says Marshal of the Realm Svante Lindqvist.

Svante Lindqvist will continue to serve as Marshal of the Realm and head of the Royal Court of Sweden until 1 September, when he will be succeeded by Fredrik Wersäll.
