The King and Queen attend the formal gathering of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences

The first part of the formal gathering was held in the Golden Hall at Stockholm City Hall. There, The King presented IVA's gold medals for 2020 and 2021.

Medal winners for 2020

• Honorary Doctor Marcus Wallenberg was awarded IVA's Great Gold Medal for his extraordinary contributions to Swedish industry, entrepreneurship, scientific development and Swedish innovation, combined with his strong commitment to social issues. He has strategically driven the development of global relations and cooperation between academia and industry.
• Åsa Bergman MSc Eng was awarded IVA's Gold Medal for her significant capacity to lead the specialists she works with in the areas of architecture and technology, and for developing a consulting company that is a European leader in the built environment. With her strong drive she has built an inclusive corporate culture characterised by equality and diversity at all levels, based on the conviction that this is how to create sustainable societal development.
• Professor Fredrik Bäckhed was awarded IVA's Gold Medal for his outstanding microbiological research on the connection between the bacterial flora in the intestines and human metabolism and health, combined with the development of production technology to produce intestinal bacteria and methods for new treatments, and for actively communicating this knowledge to the public.
• Professor Kristina Edström was awarded IVA's Gold Medal for her outstanding battery research which has brought the world closer to a solution for energy storage, an area of great significance for society. The development, under her leadership, of the next generation of battery technology for applications in the automotive industry is world leading. Her ability to inspire and guide young people enables her to build strong research teams.

Medal winners for 2021

• Professor Sverker Sörlin was awarded IVA's Great Gold Medal for his outstanding achievements as an innovative researcher, research director and active participant in social discourse, and for his meaningful contributions to and deep engagement in research and higher education.
• Doctor of Technology Sara Mazur was awarded IVA's Gold Medal for her outstanding contributions as a leader for research and innovation in industry and academia, and for her strong commitment to collaboration in areas of great significance for the development of society.
• Professor Lars Börjesson was awarded IVA's Gold Medal for his outstanding, innovative research within the physics of condensed materials and his innovative and dedicated leadership that has resulted in ground-breaking research infrastructure – in particular MAX IV and ESS – offering exceptional opportunities to learn about material properties that will be of great significance in future research and industry.
• Doctor Mikael Dolsten was awarded IVA's Gold Medal for his outstanding contributions as a researcher and leader in the pharmaceutical industry. As Chief Scientific Officer and President, Worldwide Research, Development and Medical at Pfizer – one of the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies – he has led the development of multiple new medicines and vaccines, most recently the successful development of a Covid-19 vaccine.
