The King and The Crown Princess attend WWF's autumn meeting

On Friday 22 October, The King and The Crown Princess took part in the WWF's council meeting and autumn meeting at Ulriksdal Palace.

The autumn meeting brought together the WWF Council, of which The King is Chairman.

The meeting concluded with a prize-giving ceremony, at which the Environmental Heroes of the Year for nature and climate initiatives, the Marie-Claire Cronstedt Award for ecology and nature conservation initiatives and the Panda Book of the Year 2022 award were presented by The King.

Environmental Hero of the Year

The Environmental Hero of the Year award for biological diversity was presented to the Swedish Bird Survey project. Describing its reasons, the jury wrote:

Thanks to the Swedish Bird Survey, we have invaluable information about the welfare of our Swedish birds and our valuable nature. With dedication, expertise and passion, they ensure that we get the data we need for making the right decisions in order to protect our birdlife and nature. Thank you from us, from our feathered friends, and from the planet!

The Jury

Professor Johan Rockström received the Environmental Hero of the Year award for ecological footprint. The jury wrote:

Johan Rockström has worked tirelessly to make the climate issue the top priority in our society. With his clear, direct message, he has reached many different target groups, shaken things up and made more people understand the true situation for our planet. Through his thorough research and his uncompromising approach, he has described not only the seriousness of the situation but also the solutions that are needed. We all need to work hard – NOW!

The Marie-Claire Cronstedt Award

The 2021 Marie-Claire Cronstedt Award was presented to botanist Mora Aronsson for his work within botany, ecology and nature conservation. The jury wrote:

Mora Aronsson has shown in an exemplary manner that professional development within nature conservation can be combined scientifically with deep commitment and public education at grassroots level. In both these roles, he has contributed over the decades to highlighting the importance of flora and habitats in Swedish, European and Arctic conservation work.

Panda Book of the Year 2022

The Panda Book of the Year 2022 was awarded to photographers Magnus Lundgren and Staffan Widstrand for their book 'Papua – Among Birds of Paradise and Manta Rays'. Their large photojournalism book depicts some of the world's most species-rich, unique wildernesses – the rainforests and coral reefs of New Guinea's islands.
